The 2014-2015 Student Alumni Council
Student Alumni Council
EC’s Student Alumni Council (SAC) is made up of extremely passionate students that enjoy volunteering and helping to plan numerous Alumni and student events. These events include Autism Awareness, Reunion, Athletics Alumni Weekend (AAW), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes, and Octagon Fair. Students are chosen for an executive planning committee and volunteer countless hours to make sure that each event is a success.
In addition to planning various Alumni events, SAC members also fundraise heavily to benefit the students on campus. During the 2013-2014 year, the Student Alumni Council donated $2,014 toward their $20,000 pledge to renovate a classroom.
Autism Awareness is held campus wide in an effort to raise awareness about autism during the week before
Autism Awareness month through the “Light It Up Blue” Campaign. The SAC Autism Awareness committee is directly responsible for the success of this campaign. This includes fundraising with blue cupcakes, blue puzzle piece pins, blue bracelets, and Lighting the Campus Blue the first week of April. The first Hilfiger Fashions for Autism Awareness Fashion Show was held in the Campus Center and showcased the Tommy Hilfiger Spring Collection. Immediately following the Fashion Show,
a presentation by Betsy Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger’s sister,
was hosted by SAC in the Tifft Lounge.
The SAC Reunion Committee and volunteers help to make each Reunion a success. While the Office of Alumni Relations invites alumni back to campus for three days of celebration, touring and fan-fair, the Student Alumni Council plays a huge role in the planning and execution of the event. Reunion is typically held two weeks after Commencement in June, which means that SAC members take time from their summer jobs to come back and make Reunion the best that it can be for EC Alums.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes has been held on the Elmira College
campus for the past five years, and raises over $100,000 for research with the help of over 1,200 walkers.
The SAC JDRF Committee and volunteers aid in the planning and execution of the kickoff luncheon and walk.
Athletics Alumni Weekend (AAW)
Athletics Alumni Weekend invites alumni athletes back for a weekend of competitions with current athletic teams, celebrations and fun. The SAC AAW Executive Committee and volunteers are responsible for all of the amazing purple and gold balloons and decorations that can be found in Emerson Hall, as well as the Domes.
The SAC Octagon Fair Committee assists in the planning and execution of Octagon Fair.
The Elmira College homecoming event, Octagon Fair, is held each year in the fall as a community-wide, family-oriented event. It showcases our very own talented student run clubs and organizations and is supported by our alumni. Crafters, vendors, authors, and entertainers from off campus are also invited to participate in a fun-filled day for our local and college community members. The College’s annual book sale, sponsored by the Gannett Tripp Library, is a steadfast event at the Fair, along with the Alumni Board Cake Wheel and the Annual McGraw Bookstore sale of EC apparel, where the lines are never-ending.
