  • Fr. John Satula '02

Rector, Saint James Episcopal Church of Amesbury, MA

“My work in the Theatre Department, particularly performing monologues, helped alleviate my fear of public speaking and develop a stronger voice – very important to preaching and teaching.”

John was one of many students to feel an instant connection to Elmira College upon interviewing. Originally from Larchmont, New York, John was raised Episcopalian along with his two siblings, participating in numerous Church activities from an early age. His high school involvement in a Performing Arts Curriculum Experience solidified his love for Theatre, guiding him to Elmira College’s Theatre Program. John “knew right away [Elmira] was where [he] wanted to be for the next four years” and fondly recalls the pleasure of meeting Dr. Thomas Meier, 12th President of Elmira College, during his first visit to Campus.

Though John was not always entirely certain of his career path, his time at Elmira College greatly contributed to his decision to pursue ordained ministry. As a Theatre major at Elmira, John developed a strong voice and overcame fears of public speaking while participating in other College activities such as JV Soccer, intramural softball and WECW college radio. He credits Dr. Robert Shephard as well as Fr. Donald Matthews of Elmira’s Grace Episcopal Church for helping him to discern his call to Priesthood.

In 2003, John began attending The General Theological Seminary in New York City. Highlights of his career include being Ordained to the Diaconate in 2006 and to the Priesthood in 2007, followed by several Church positions as an assistant and eventually leading to his current position as Rector at Saint James Episcopal Church where he has been for a little over a year.

In advising current and prospective students at Elmira, John suggests, “Take advantage of everything EC has to offer, and don’t wait to become involved”. A few of John’s favorite memories of Elmira include “ ‘Studio 54’ and our epic parties as well as scary nighttime trips to Bronson – Theatre people know what [John] is talking about”.
